School Records Fall on Day Two at ACC's

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Miami swimming& diving team wrapped up another impressive day at the Atlantic CoastConference Championships Thursday.

Just as they did Wednesday, Miami got the night’s actionstarted in strong fashion. The Canes’ entry in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay seta new school record in the event, as the four-member relay team touched thewall in a time of 1:31.67. Senior Celeste Degen, freshman My Fridell, seniorHannah Kling, and junior Katherine Nicholson helped the Hurricanes continuetheir early momentum into day two.

“We definitely had another good night tonight, and our 200Free Relay was a great way to get things started,” head swimming coach ChristieShefchunas said.

Not to be outdone, senior Christine Anderson and sophomoreLucy Worrall took first and second place respectively in the consolation finalof the 200-Yard IM. Anderson, who finished in a time of 2:00.78, bested theprevious school record set back in 2000.

Senior diver Carrie Dragland made Miami’s second trip to the podium of the championships, capturing third place in the 3-meter event with a score of 364.65.  After stellar qualifying rounds, junior Lindsay Lester (fourth) and sophomore Kara McCormack (seventh) helped highlight another strong day for Miami divers.

Degen, a member of the record-setting 200 Free Relay,finished with a personal-best time of 22.51 seconds in the 50-Yard Freestylepreliminaries. She would capture seventh in the finals, touching the wall in atime of 22.66.

With contributions from the entire roster, the Hurricanescontinued their strong run at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. On Wednesday,Miami’s 200 Medley Relay team set a new school record in the event en route toa silver medal performance, while Worrall broke the school record in the 200-YardFreestyle while leading off the 800 Freestyle Relay event.

Despite another strong day, Shefchunas is confident the bestis yet to come for her young Hurricanes squad.

“We had a great night, but tomorrow is going to be a verybig day for us,” she said. “We’re going to ride the momentum from the last twodays into tomorrow, and I’m confident we’ll be able to continue this fantasticride.”
