Coral Gables, Fla.- Born in Oslo, Norway, Carl Sundberg came to the Coral Gables campus asthe former No. 1 ranked player in Norway in the 14s, 16s, and 18s singlesdivision, an ITF champion of a grade 5 event, and winner of 13 Norwegiannational championships. Posting an 18-13 record in singles play, Sundbergearned five wins over ACC opponents knocking off nationally-ranked opponentsfrom Georgia Tech, Clemson, NC State, Wake Forest, and Boston College. In theACC tournament, Sundberg defeated No. 11 North Carolina’s Clay Donato and No.10 Florida State’s Maciek Sykut. Teaming primarily with Daniel Vallverdu,Sundberg compiled a 25-9 overall record. The tandem, who were ranked as high asthird in the nation, picked up eight wins over ranked opponents. Seeded thirdin the NCAA Doubles Tournament, the pair advanced to the NCAA’s Round of 16after defeating TCU’s 50th-ranked duo of Kriegler Brink and Cosmin Cotet, 2-6,6-2, 7-5. For his success in doubles completion, Sundberg was elected to the2008 All-American team.
Building upon his freshman single season success, Sundbergwent on to post a 20-7 singles season mark. Playing in the No. 4 position,Sundberg posted a perfect 6-0 mark and a 9-2 mark while playing out of the No.5 position. Nationally ranked throughout most of the season and peaking at No.78, Sundberg collected victories in both his matches against ranked opponents.Based on their success from the previous season, Sundberg and Vallverdu enteredthe fall ranked No. 1 in the nation. Overall, Sundberg compiled a 14-14 doublesrecord including a 7-4 mark against the ACC.
Despite the drop-off in singles victories, 20 in hissophomore season to 13 in his junior season, Sundberg still performed well anddefeated quality opponents (No. 37 Alex Musialek of No. 9 Kentucky and JoshuaGraves of No. 36 Northwestern). For thethird consecutive season, Sundberg collected 14-plus victories in doublescompetition. Pairing with Ignacio Taboada, the duo went 6-4 overall, winningfour of their last five matches versus ACC competition.
For the third time in his four years as a Hurricane, Sundbergcompiled 18-plus wins. Posting a 20-11 overall singles mark, his second 20 winseason, Sundberg recorded a team best 9-2 mark in ACC play, a perfect record of4-0 out of the No. 3 position, and won eight consecutive matches to finish theregular season. Included in those eight straight wins were straight setvictories over No. 19 North Carolina’s 90th-ranked Joey Burkhardt(6-2, 6-2) and No. 10 Duke’s Fred Saba (6-3, 6-3). Partnering primarily withChristian Blöcker, Sundberg compiled a 12-15 mark in doubles competition. Theduo went 7-4 in ACC play and won three of four matches at the UM Invitational.
Sundberg closed out his collegiate career with 64 doublesvictories and 71 singles victories ranking him eighth and 12th, respectively, in Miami history. Sundberg who graduated from theUniversity of Miami in May 2011 with a business degree, was a two-time UM BookBuster (3.0 GPA or higher) and was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll(3.2 GPA or higher).
