CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 64 University of Miami men’s tennis team fell to No. 4 Ohio State, 7-0, in the Columbus Regional championship match of the ITA Kickoff weekend event.

Today’s loss puts the Canes’ record at 2-2 on the spring season.

Ohio State won the doubles point with wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Omar Aly and Gabriel Flores were downed by Blaz Rola and Connor Smith, 8-4, at the No. 2 position. Diego Soto and Henrique Tsukamoto, playing at No. 3 doubles, fell to Ohio State’s Peter Kobelt and Kevin Metka, 8-3. Wilfredo Gonzalez and Marco Stancati were tied with Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen at five, before the match was called and scored as unfinished.

The Canes couldn’t find a rhythm in singles as five of the six singles matches against the Buckeyes were lost in straight sets. Ohio State’s success at singles play doesn’t come as a surprise, as the team touts the No. 1, No. 13 and No. 30 ranked singles players in the nation.

At No. 1 singles, Diego Soto fell 6-0 in first set, before being defeated in the second, 6-3, by Blaz Rola.

The Canes surrendered two more points after being defeated by Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith, who areranked No. 1 and No. 13 at singles play, respectively. Wilfredo Gonzalez had a tough loss against Kobelt, losing 6-1 in the first set and 6-2 in the second. Victor Mauz fell to Smith, 6-2, 6-2. No. 30 Chris Diaz defeated Marco Stancati, 6-1, 6-0 in the fifth position. Hunter Callahan completed the shutout for the Buckeyes with a 6-0, 6-0, win over newcomer William Albanese.

After splitting a pair of matches this weekend, the Hurricanes look to bounce back as they open play at home when they host UCF Friday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. followed by another home match on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. against Rice at the Neill Schiff Tennis Center.
