Women's Tennis Hosts ITA Kick-Off Weekend
CORALGABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis teamis serving as one of 15 host sites during this weekend’s 2013 ITA NationalIndoor Qualifier, with UM hosting Friday and Saturday at the Neil Schiff TennisCenter. The winner(s) from each host site will then head to Charlottesville, Va.,Feb. 8-11 for the ITA National Indoor Finals.
The Hurricanes will be joined by teams fromthe 56th-ranked University of Hawaii, 35th-ranked ArizonaState University and 44th-ranked Oklahoma University for the weekendaffair. The matches begin on Friday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. with the University ofMiami taking on Hawaii. That match will be followed promptly at 2 p.m. by ArizonaState vs. Oklahoma.
“We need to stay on target this weekend andnot take any team lightly,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Iwant to begin with great doubles on Friday and move from there. We havethree very solid teams coming to town and our focus needs to stay on playingaggressive with a lot of discipline.”
Miami (2-0) enters the weekend ranked No. 9in this week’s ITA poll, staying put at that position from three weeks agoafter victories over Florida Atlantic and No. 24 Illinois. UM also claimed theMiami Spring Invite in which No. 11 Texas, No. 14 Texas A&M and No. 26Vanderbilt paid a visit to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Canes are led by three players ranked inthe polls, including a pair of freshmen, Kelsey Laurente (No. 51) andStephanie Wagner (No. 92). Sophomore Lina Lileikite is also ranked at No.57. Though not ranked yet, the doublesteam of Laurente and junior Brittany Dubins upset the seventh-ranked tandem ofTexas A&M’s Cristina Stancu and Stefania Hristov this past weekend.
The second day of action will feature theconsolation match beginning at 10 a.m. The championship match will begin at 2p.m., or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first match.
