Freshman Ocampo Places Fourth at Dixie

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – While the University of Miami student body is enjoying some well-earned rest during the school’s winter break, UM freshman golfer Christina Ocampo is taking to the links for some off-season training. Ocampo, the Delray Beach, Fla. native, placed fourth Wednesday in the four-day, 72-hole Dixie Amateur Championship.

The event, held at the par-72 6,200-yard Heron Bay Golf Club in Coral Springs, Fla., saw Ocampo register her best score with a third-round 69. Overall she finished the tournament with a score of 3-under par (70-73-69-73=285).

“It feels good to be back in a tournament,” Ocampo said. “Playing this well is a relief after not playing as well as I would have liked this past fall.”

The tournament featured talent from all across the collegiate scene. Ninety-eight participants took part in the championship, some from highly ranked schools such as No. 21 Purdue, No. 17 Michigan State, No. 7 Alabama, No. 24 Northwestern, No. 9 North Carolina and No. 16 Stanford.

Isabelle Lendl, of the University of Florida, took the top spot with remarkable rounds of 74, 70, 68 and 66 for a 278 total to finish 4-strokes ahead of second-place finishers Cindy Feng (71-73-70-68=282) and Carly Ray Goldstein (72-67-68-75=282).

The off-season doesn’t end here as Ocampo will enter one more tournament before the start of the spring semester. She enters the Women’s South Atlantic Amateur Golf Championship held Jan. 9-12 at the Oceanside Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla.
