Benjamin Named AFC Player of the Week

NEW YORK — For his record-setting punt return in a Week 14 matchup with Kansas City, Browns’ rookie Travis Benjamin was recognized with AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors Wednesday.

Benjamin, who took a second-quarter punt 93 yards for a touchdown, recorded the longest punt return in franchise history on the play. The return, which gave the Browns a 10-7 lead, was the longest in the AFC so far this season, and marked the second-longest of any player through Week 14.

The Belle Glade, Fla., native, who also took a reverse 15 yards to set up a Cleveland touchdown later in the game, became the first Brown to be recognized with Special Teams Player of the Week honors since Josh Cribbs in September 2011.

Benjamin becomes the sixth ProCane to be recognized with Player of the Week accolades, joining Arizona Cardinals’ defensive end Calais Campbell (Week Two), Indianapolis Colts’ wide receiver Reggie Wayne (Week Five), New York Giants’ defensive back Antrel Rolle (Week Six), Miami Dolphins’ defensive end Olivier Vernon (Week Eight) and New Orleans Saints’ tight end Jimmy Graham (Week 10). In addition, Houston Texans’ wide receiver Andre Johnson was named Offensive Player of the Month for the month of November.
