S&D Set for Georgia Tech Invitational
ATLANTA, Ga. — The University of Miami swimming & diving team will return to action at the the Georgia Tech Invitational beginning Fri., Nov. 30.
Miami will be one of seven teams competing in the three-day event. Joining the Hurricanes at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center will be: Alabama, Clemson, Emory, FGCU, Florida State, and the host Yellow Jackets.
In last year’s invitational, the Hurricanes utilized an early surge of momentum to finish in fifth place with 564.5 points. Though the team fell in its most recent tri-meet with Duke and NC State, head swimming coach Christie Shefchunas expects the team to rebound this weekend.
“The girls are in a really good place,” Shefchunas said. “We kind of went through a bit of a November slump. They have a lot of energy going into this, I think they’re excited for the challenge ahead.”
Senior Sofia Johansson and sophomore Lucy Worrall anchored the Hurricaes during last year’s trip to Atlanta. Johansson won the 100 breaststroke with a NCAA “B” cut time of 1:01.90, while Worrall delivered a “B” cut time of 54.35 in the 100 butterfly.
After a few weeks of team practice in the pool, Shefchunas has high expectations for her team.
“They’ve put in a lot of work through the times we haven’t had to compete,” she said. “We’ve been doing a lot of racing in practice, and I think they’re in a good place both physically and mentally.”
