Sundararaman Wins ACC Player of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior setter NrithyaSundararaman of the 23rd-ranked University of Miami volleyball teamhas been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, the leagueoffice announced Monday. She becomes the fifth different Hurricane to earn thehonor, as UM has had a player recognized six times in 13 weeks this season.
“Nrithyahad a great weekend to close out her home regular season career,” head coach NicoleLantagne Welch said. “She is a big reason we have been able to have such abalanced attack by spreading the ball around effectively to all of ouroffensive weapons. She has also improved her blocking this year to help ourteam’s defensive efforts.”
Sundararaman,a native of Naperville, Ill., continued her strong season with 11.50 assistsper set in two sweeps over the weekend. In addition to 34 assists againstBoston College, the setter connected on a season-high five kills in seven attemptsto go with seven digs.
Priorto the match versus Maryland, the program honored the lone senior on the rosterwith a ceremony with her family on the court. Sundararaman then went on tocollect nine digs and 35 assists in the match to help the Hurricanes finish theregular season undefeated at home.
Sundararamanranks third in program history with 2,257 career assists and leads the ACC with10.68 assists per set this season. She has also excelled in the classroom witha 3.90 GPA as a neurobiology major, being named Capital One AcademicAll-District earlier this month.
Thesetter joins junior Taylor Hollins (Oct. 29), sophomore Emani Sims (Oct. 1,Oct. 22), sophomore Alexis Mourning (Oct. 8) and junior Alex Johnson (Sept. 10)as Hurricanes to win ACC Player of the Week this year. Miami has won the awardmore than any other team in the conference.
“Ican’t say enough about how much of a team we are this season and every playerin our program is contributing to our team success,” Lantagne Welch said.
Miami(25-4, 17-2) is currently No. 23 in the ACVA Coaches Poll and will travel toface Florida State for the ACC title Friday at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcaston ESPN3.
