Stancati in Quarterfinals at USTA/ITA Regional
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Marco Stancati of the University of Miami men’s tennis team won a pair of matches on Saturday to play his way into the quarterfinals of the consolation draw of the 2012 USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Tallahassee, Fla.
Stancati defeated Ravi Patel of USF, 7-6 (5), 7-5, in the Round of 32, then downed Florida’s Luke Johnson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to earn a spot in Sunday’s consolation draw quarterfinals.
In the main draw, Gabriel Flores, Wilfredo Gonzalez and Diego Soto all won their Round of 32 matches, and Gonzalez, Soto and Victor Mauz each faced players seeded in the top six of the tournament.
Gabriel Flores made quick work of Didrik Berg (Stetson), 6-0, 6-3, but lost, 6-3, 6-2 to Victor Valente from Georgia State. Wilfredo Gonzalez also won in straight sets in his first match of the day, defeating Norbert Nemcsek (UNF), 6-2, 6-1, then No. 3 seed Hemus Pieters of Georgia beat Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-4. Diego Soto defeated Cristian Gonzalez Mendez in three, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, but lost 6-0, 6-0 to No. 6 seed Florent Diep of Florida in his second match. Victor Mauz also played in today’s Round of 32, losing 6-3, 6-3, to No. 1 seed Van Overbeek of Florida.
Omar Aly had a busy day, playing six total sets in the singles consolation draw. In the Round of 32, he defeated Joao Gauer of Florida State, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7, but after battling 3-6, 6-3 in the first two sets, lost 10-8 in the tiebreaker to Casey Kay of Georgia.
In the qualifying consolation matches, Henrique Tsukamoto and Mauz each defeated players from Georgia Southern, downing Marco Osorio, 3-6, 6-3, 10-3 and Alex Doherty, 6-3, 6-4, respectively. Mark Schanerman lost his consolation match to Lance Lvovsky of Florida Gulf Coast.
