Four Canes In Singles Round of 32 at USTA-ITA
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Four University of Miami men’s tennis players moved into the Round of 32 at the 2012 USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Tallahassee, Fla.
Diego Soto and Wilfredo Gonzalez each defended their top 16 seeds by winning their Round of 64 matches. Soto downed USF’s Guillermo de Vilchez in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Gonzalez also won in two sets, defeating Cahit Kapukiran of Stetson, 6-3, 6-0.
It only took Victor Mauz two sets, 6-0, 6-3, to beat Simon Julin of Stetson, who played his way into the draw by winning his qualifier on Thursday. Gabriel Flores went the distance with Federico Sabogal of USF, who was seeded in the top 16, defeating the Bulls player 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
In other Round of 64 singles main draw matches, Marco Stancati lost to Georgia’s No. 8 seed Nathan Pasha 6-4, 6-2, while Omar Aly was defeated by top 16 seed Ben Wagland (UGA), 6-4, 6-4.
Henrique Tsukamoto won a pair of matches in the qualifying consolation singles matches, downing a pair of players from Florida Gulf Coast University. Tsukamoto defeated Dylan Gunning 6-4, 6-0, then beat Michael Beiler 6-2, 6-4. Jack Murphy lost a pair of matches, to Beiler, 7-5, 6-3, and to Anish Sharma (GT), 6-3, 6-2.
In the doubles main draw, Stancati and Gonzalez paired up to defeat FGCU’s Jordi Vives and Jackson Moore, 8-5, in the Round of 64. The Canes pair came up short, 8-5, in the Round of 32 to Georgia Tech’s Nathan Rakitt and Juan Melian. Aly and Mark Schanerman also picked up a Round of 64 victory, defeating Pedro Wagner and Mario Samson (UCF), 8-6, but lost in the second round, 8-4, to UNF’s Moritz Buerchner and Norbert Nemcsek.
Mauz and Murphy lost to Sofiane Chevallier and Robert Schulze (Ga. State), 8-3, in the Round of 64 and in the second round, Soto and Flores were defeated, 8-5, by Andres Bucaro and Michael Rinaldi (FSU).
