Schwitter, Rossi Tally in Key Road Victory
CLEMSON, S.C. — Goals from junior Tara Schwitter and freshman Allie Rossi helped the Miami Hurricanes earn an important conference victory over Clemson Sunday afternoon at Historic Riggs Field.
“I want to give credit to Clemson for making it more difficult on us in the second half,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “I am proud of this team. Today was a very chippy game, and our kids responded well.”
Sophomore keeper Emily Lillard recorded her fourth shutout of the season in the team’s 2-0 decision, one that helped Miami improve its record to 7-5-1 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Anagnost pointed to the play of midfielder Jordan Roseboro as instrumental in the team’s victory.
“Jordan displayed the on-the-field leadership that we have been desperate to have,” he said. “She was intense, and I thought was the best player on the field. I hope more players can emulate that mentality, because that is how we should always play.”
Schwitter tallied her first goal of the year in the 18th minute with a low shot off a redirection from the top of the box. Assists on the play were credited to freshmen Ally Andreini and Jasmine Paterson.
The visitors benefited from an opportunistic play by freshman Allie Rossi late in the game that sealed the team’s victory. Rossi’s one-timer off a misplayed ball from Tigers goalkeeper Hunter Rittgers gave Miami a 2-0 advantage in the 71st minute.
“We got great minutes from Allie, who scored a very big first collegiate goal,” Anagnost added. “Tara also played a good game and scored a great goal.”
Paterson recorded two assists on the day, which bolstered her point total to eight on the season.
“Jasmine re-entered the game in the second half and changed it for us. When she is switched on and working hard, she is incredible,” Anagnost said.
Lillard kept the Tigers off the scoreboard with another strong performance, recording four saves in the clean sheet. With 90-minute showings from veteran defenders Ali Brennan, Blake Stockton and Maddie Simms, the Hurricanes left Riggs Field with their sixth shutout of the season.
Miami returns home for two conference match-ups this week against Virginia (Oct. 11, 7 p.m) and Virginia Tech (Oct. 14, 1 p.m).
