Emani Sims Named ACC Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C – Sophomore middle blocker EmaniSims of the University of Miami volleyball team has been named the AtlanticCoast Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Sherecorded 32 kills on a .500 hitting percentage over the weekend to help leadthe Hurricanes to two home conference victories.

“Emanihad an outstanding weekend for us coming up big attacking and blocking in bothmatches,” head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “She was a force at the netand made it difficult for our opponents to slow her down. It also shows thestrong effort our passers, defenders and setters put forth enabling us to getthe ball to her frequently. This is a well-deserved honor.”

Inthe team’s 3-1 win over Duke, Sims matched her career high with 18 kills, whilenotching seven total blocks at the net. Against Wake Forest, she picked up 14kills in three sets on a .722 hitting percentage, a new career best. Thesophomore made only one error in 18 total attempts against the Deacons.

Forthe season, Sims has 148 kills on a .343 hitting percentage (ninth-best in theACC). In addition, the middle blocker is fourth in the league with 1.20blocks/set. She was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team.

Thismarks the second career ACC weekly honor for Sims, who was also was namedFreshman of the Week on Oct. 31, 2011. She follows junior right side AlexJohnson as the second Hurricane to win Player of the Week (Sept. 10) thisseason.

Miami(12-3, 4-1) will continue its homestand this weekend against two teams also atthe top of the league standings, NC State (15-1, 5-0) and North Carolina (13-2,4-1).
