Kelsey Laurente's Streak Continues
AMELIAISLAND, Fla. – Miami’s KelseyLaurente advanced to the quarterfinals of the Amelia Island Women’s TennisChampionships on Thursday at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation.
A day after upsetting Alexis King, who is ranked566th in the world, Laurente needed three sets in her win overAlexandra Poorta of the Netherlands.
“Todaywas a great example of a match that was decided by the details,” assistantwomen’s tennis coach Alex Santos said. “Kelsey worked extremely hard to earnthe victory.”
The freshman rallied from a first set loss(3-6), winning the final two sets, 6-2, 6-4.
“I felt that she could have done a better jobin her first set,” Santos said. “However, the way she competed to get back inthe match is a reason why she is a Hurricane.”
Laurente’s quarterfinal match will come Fridayagainst Japan native Mari Osaka. Matches are set to start at 10 a.m. andLaurente and Osaka are scheduled to be the second match of the day on Court 5.
Santos added, “In sports, it’s hard topredict an outcome, but when you prepare the right way, you become a betterathlete.
“Kelsey has been extremely methodical in theway she has been approaching every match and building routines to besuccessful.”
