Four Canes Win on Day Two at Bedford Cup
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Three Universityof Miami men’s tennis players won matches in the singles consolation bracket at the 2012Bedford Cup held at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville.
Wilfredo Gonzalezdefeated No. 5 Taylor Albrecht of FAU in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 3-0, to move onin the event while both Gabriel Flores and Henrique Tsukamoto also picked up winsin the consolation bracket. Flores downed Robbie Dubuque of FAU in straightsets, 6-4, 6-2, as Tsukamoto won in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, over MoritzPronath from Bethune-Cookman. Rookie Jack Murphy lost, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0, toStetson’s Didrik Berg, also in the consolation bracket.
Diego Soto startedthe day with a victory over Seminole Anderson Reed, 6-3, 7-6, but lost to No. 7Moritz Buerchner (UNF,) 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the Round of 16. In his previousmatch, Buerchner defeated Omar Aly in the Second Round, 6-2, 6-3.
In other matches inthe championship draw, Victor Mauz fell to Dominic Cotrone (FSU) 7-6, 6-4, MarkSchanerman lost 6-2, 6-2 to Chidi Gabriel of FAMU and Marco Stancati fell toNo. 2 Mike Arnold of Florida 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, Alyand Schanerman battled into the Round of 16, coming up short, 8-6, to FSU’s JoaoGauer and Cristian Gonzales.
The Bedford Cup is an individual draw with an 11-teamfield, all from the state of Florida. Those teams include Florida State and theUniversity of Florida, who advanced to the NCAA Round of 32 and Sweet 16,respectively, as well as UNF, UCF, FAU, FAMU, FGCU, USF, Stetson, andBethune-Cookman.
This year’s tournament is hosted by the University ofFlorida.
