Canes Open Fall Season at Bedford Cup

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team opens its 2012 fall season with a trip to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the second annual Bedford Cup. This year’s tournament will be hosted by the University of Florida and run from Friday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Sept. 17.
“The Bedford Cup has a very high level of competition and there are going to be great players throughout the draw,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “We are looking to get a lot of matches out of this tournament. Hopefully we’ll get to watch the guys compete and really analyze their games. We should get a lot out of this tournament.”
The Canes are part of an 11-team field which features both Florida State and the University of Florida, who advanced to the 2012 NCAA Championship’s Round of 32 and Sweet 16, respectively. Also competing in the event will be UNF, UCF, FAU, FAMU, FGCU, USF, Stetson, and Bethune-Cookman.

Due to the single-draw format of the Bedford Cup, the Hurricanes’ coaching staff will have the ability to evaluate each individual’s game in multiple matches against various levels of competition.
Under the guidance of Rincon, now in his ninth year at the helm of the men’s tennis program, the Hurricanes will rely on their veteran experience heading into the season. The nine-man team, which includes two seniors and four juniors, is comprised of players from seven countries: the United States (three), Puerto Rico, Guatemala, France, Spain, Italy and Brazil.
