Pezzulo and Arrington Highlight XC Opener

TAMPA, Fla. – Juniors Sean Pezzulo and LindsiArrington led the way for the University of Miami cross country teams as they openedthe season on Friday at the USF Invitational. The men’s team place fourth outof nine teams, while the women were sixth out of 10 squads.

“Thecourse today was very wet and sloppy from the recent storms,” assistant crosscountry coach Damon Griffiths said. “It allowed me to see who was ready to racein conditions that were difficult.”

Pezzulofinished fourth in the field with a time of 26:58.23, while Arrington placedthird with a mark of 18:57.28. The men ran an 8K and the women a 5K at the USFgolf course in Tampa, Fla.

 “Sean came into the fall focused and reallyput in the work this summer,” Griffiths said. “Lindsi has also looked very goodall fall. Today’s performance is a good indicator for what she can do thisseason.”

Overall,four Hurricanes placed in the top 25 in the men’s race. Senior Greg Kaczkaplaced 15th with a time of 28:01.33, while sophomore JaCee Jarnaginfinished at 28:16.57 (20th). In addition, junior Luke Fontaineclocked in with a time of 28:27.41 for a 23rd-place finish.

On thewomen’s side, junior Alaine Tate followed Arrington with a time of 20:03.43 (11thplace) in her first race a Cane.

“We havethe first race under our belts, and have time to improve between now and ournext meet,” Griffiths concluded.

Next up,members of the Hurricanes will compete at the Greentree Invitational at KendallIndian Hammocks Park on Saturday. The college races start at 7 and 7:30 a.m.,the high school varsity follow at 8 and 8:30 a.m. and JV races followafterwards.
