How did you become a Hurricanes fan?
I’m from Merritt Island, Fla. originally. I went to the same high school, and lived in the same neighborhood, as guys like Bubba McDowell, Hurlie Brown, Darryl Spencer, and Derrick Ham. Bubba was well respected in our town, and as a kid, I wanted to follow his path. Hurlie & Darryl would come back and speak to us about what it took to play on the next level, and their actions reinforced that “Cane Family” mentality.
Do you find it difficult supporting Miami all the way from Kansas?
I live in Kansas City, so no one can really relate to the passion I have for my Canes. But, I still travel to at least three or four games per year. This year I’m attending the Kansas State, Notre Dame, Florida State, and Virginia games.
Are there watch parties that you attend for Hurricanes games?
I turned our 720-square foot basement into my very own “Hurri-Cave.” If I’m not at the game in person, I’m in the HurriCave… at my own bar.
Have you found any other Hurricanes fans in Kansas?
My friend Jeremy Bolinger is the one of the only Hurricanes I know from Kansas at the moment. We’re both on the same message boards, so we talk pretty often.
How do you support the Hurricanes – Any apartment decorations? Favorite piece of Canes gear?
Our basement is now known as the “The Hurri-Cave.” We’ll have anywhere from eight to ten fans gathering in it this weekend. I have tons of Hurricanes gear – and I wear it everyday. Fearless, proud, loyal, rabid Cane.
Any favorite memories or stories from your time as a Hurricanes fan?
Too many to name, but I’ll rattle off a few:
1) Wearing Miami Hurricane gear under my BDU’s in the Army. The games were tape delayed when we were in Germany, and I used to try and avoid any news releases about the outcome so I could watch it on my terms. I loved arguing with Nebraska fans about how great Miami was, and how elite Florida talent was in relation to the rest of the country.
2) I got out of the Army in 1999. I was finally able to see Hurricane games in person again. My first live action was Miami vs. FSU in 2000. Unbelievable.
3) Mo Sikes’ interception return for a TD vs UF. I was sitting in the middle of their student section, and purchased the ticket for $160. They were going nuts right before that… no one sat down the entire time. You could hear nothing but Canes roaring when Sikes crossed the endzone and politely placed the ball on the field. Priceless.
4) Sean Taylor vs FSU – every game.
