Miami Welcomes Idaho to Cobb Stadium

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — After a successful trip to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium for the WVU 90 Minute Classic, the Miami Hurricanes return home for the first of four consecutive match-ups at Cobb Stadium. Kick-off for their Fri., Sept. 7 contest against the visiting Idaho Vandals is set for 7 p.m.

The Hurricanes, who won their Classic opener against Pitt in overtime before a scoreless draw against host West Virginia, are looking to build momentum after a strong weekend showing.

“I think we did a much better job of controlling possession of the ball,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “And it resulted in increased opportunities.”

The Hurricanes’ impressive goal differential of +6 has been keyed by the strong play of sophomore keeper Emily Lillard. The Kansas native, who has an impressive 0.56 goals against average through five starts, earned a spot on Top Drawer Soccer‘s Team of the Week after recording two shutouts over the weekend.

Coach Anagnost would like to see the team’s offense match the play of its defense, which has allowed only three goals all season.

“We have to be more dangerous in the final third,” Anagnost said. “We’ve done a better job of holding possession, and now we have to start converting chances.”

Idaho enters its match-up with the Hurricanes looking to forget its two most recent losses at the Bronco Invitational. The Vandals (2-4-0) are led offensively by senior Chelsea Small (three goals) and freshman Meli Cortez (two goals, one assist).

“They’re a dangerous team, including the WAC Preseason Player of the Year [Small],” Anagnost said. “We have to be ready to play.”
