Canes Battle West Virginia to Scoreless Draw

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Sophomore transferEmily Lillard recorded the second consecutive shutoutof her Miami career as the Hurricanes played to a 0-0 draw against WestVirginia (2-3-1) in the 90 Minute Classic on Sunday.

TheCanes (3-2-1) entered their second match of the classic coming off a 1-0overtime victory over Pittsburgh on Friday.

The defensive intensity carried over to Sunday as the Miami defense allowed just 11 shots, only four of which were on goal. The Canes have only allowed four goals in the season’s first six matches.

“I thought our women were fantastic today,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “We had the ball for an enormous part of the match.”

Veterans Kate Howarth and Tara Schwitter paced the Canes with four shots apiece. In all, Miami fired 21 shots, but were unable to reach the back of the net with six shots on goal. The Canes have seen plenty of success on set pieces this season. On Sunday, UM drew 19 fouls and took seven corner kicks compared to WVU’s three.

“We are still disappointed we did not put anything in the goal,” added Anagnost. “We still lacked a little tactically with our decision making, as well as some composure and technique in the final quarter of the field. I want to give West Virginia credit, they gutted it out today.”

Afterfive days off, the Canes will welcome Idaho to Cobb Stadium for the first offour consecutive home matches on Friday, Sept. 7. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
