CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the first time since Sunday’s scrimmage, the Miami Hurricanes returned to the Greentree Practice Fields on Tuesday for their third set of two-a-day practices.
The morning buzz throughout pre-practice interviews was second-year head coach Al Golden’s appointment of junior QB Stephen Morris as his team’s starter for the Sept. 1 season opener at Boston College. Morris and sophomore Ryan Williams had been competing for the starting job during the first two weeks of fall camp.
“(Stephen Morris) earned it,” Golden said. “He had a great off-season, had a great summer. He’s the unquestioned leader right now. His performance is backing that up.
“He had a great scrimmage (Saturday),” Golden said. “All (Saturday was) was the finale, if you will, to what was a great camp to that point and a great summer. Clearly, he deserves the starting nod.”
Six Hurricane defenders donned black jerseys during the morning session – Anthony Chickillo, Shayon Green, Ramon Buchanan, Brandon McGee, Tracy Howard and Dalton Botts.
The first half of the morning practice focused on punt and kick returns, while the second half focused primarily on simulating game situations. On the first drill of the day, Williams connected with Phillip Dorsett for a touchdown, while running backs Mike James, Duke Johnson and Eduardo Clements continued their momentum from Sunday’s scrimmage.
On the defensive side, Green, McGee and Gaines shined on defense during the morning’s activities.In the afternoon, focus shifted to third- and fourth-down situations, while placekickers Jake Wieclaw and Matt Goudis led the point-after and field goal drills.
#CanesCamp continues with day 12 at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday; the Hurricanes’ fourth set of two-a-days will commence Thursday at the Greentree Practice Fields.
