CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Eight days into #CanesCamp, the Miami Hurricanes held its second two-a-day practice of the fall Friday at the Greentree Practice Fields. In an effort to miss the routine South Florida afternoon rains, Friday’s second practice was moved up nearly 45 minutes.
The morning session featured a run emphasis, while the afternoon practice focused on third-down and goal line situations.
“We’re starting to learn how to work,” second-year head coach Al Golden told the media prior to Friday morning’s practice. “I don’t think conditioning is really a factor right now. We need to hone in and concentrate more. We’re finishing plays better.”
One of the big stories of #CanesCamp thus far has been the play of sophomore LB Denzel Perryman.
“Denzel’s camp right now is nothing short of phenomenal in the leadership he’s providing,” Golden said. “He’s really doing an unbelievable job leading for us. His effort on special teams has been extraordinary and I’m really proud of him for that.”
Friday morning saw the return of junior LB Jimmy Gaines, who spent the first seven days of #CanesCamp wearing a yellow limited-contact jersey.
Sophomore WR Phillip Dorsett and senior P Dalton Botts were not in pads for the morning practice, while junior OL Brandon Linder, junior QB Stephen Morris and sophomore WR Rashawn Scott were not pads in the afternoon.
Redshirt senior WR Kendal Thompkins continued his impressive fall camp with a 30-yard TD reception from Morris in the morning. The morning session also featured a 35-yard breakaway run by senior RB Mike James and a pair of 30-yarders from junior FB Maurice Hagens and junior RB Eduardo Clements.
In the afternoon, sophomore QB Ryan Williams completed a pass to Dorsett for a 20-yard gain along the sideline. On the very next play, the duo connected again as Dorsett made a diving grab over the middle.
Sophomore DL Anthony Chickillo was relentless in pursuit and recorded a sack on Williams. Freshmen QBs Preston Dewey and Gray Crow showed solid pocket presence, eluding defenders and completing passes for sizable gains.
#CanesCamp continues Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by the inaugural Canes Correspondents Luncheon (Media Day) at 11 a.m.
Prior to practice head coach Al Golden, DL Ricardo Williams, RB Mike James and LB Jimmy Gaines met with reporters and talked about the progress of #CanesCamp.
