CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Day three of the #CanesCamp featured the Miami Hurricanes football team in shoulder pads for the first time. Sunday’s spirited practice featured a welcome sound on the Greentree Practice Fields: the sound of pads popping.
Second-year head coach Al Golden said Sunday that he and the coaching staff would find out a lot about the younger guys in their first day in shoulder pads.
“We’ll find out a lot (about the young guys),” Golden said. “Hopefully, there will be guys that have grown (since the spring) because we are still relatively young. So we’ll learn about them.
“More importantly, we’ll see whether the young guys bite or not,” Golden said. “It’s one thing to bark, but we’ll see if the young guys go ahead and bite today.”
Sunday’s practice was fast-paced, moving from drill to drill and feature a large portion of live action and tremendous amount of all-around effort. Throughout practice, the coaching staff was emphasizing the intricate details of each play.
Both the offense and defense had some solid efforts today, as the offensive and defensive lines were going after each other. Senior DB Brandon McGee made a good pass break-up in 11-on-11, while sophomore DL Olsen Pierre knocked down two passes at the line of scrimmage.
A pair of offensive plays stood out from Sunday’s practice. First, redshirt senior WR Kendal Thompkins had a nice grab in traffic along the sidelines. Then, junior QB Stephen Morris connected with sophomore WR Phillip Dorsett, who had an impressive diving catch for a 20-yard gain before falling out of bounds.
#CanesCamp continues Monday with Miami’s fourth practice, which is slated for 8:20 a.m.
Prior to practice Head Coach Al Golden, OL Jon Feliciano, DL Shayon Green and DL Darius Smith met with reporters and talked about their progress.
