Canes Wrap Up Rainy First Day of #CanesCamp

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Mother Nature was unkind to the schedule makers on Friday, the first day of fall camp for the Miami Hurricanes. The first session of the 2012 season was set to start at 2:10 p.m., but storm clouds pushed back the start of camp until 6 p.m.

After a three-hour rain delay, Hurricanes football team took to the Greentree Practice Field for the first time since April. Second-year head coach Al Golden and the Hurricanes are now one-day deep into a long stretch of fall camp.

“I hope we’re developing unity and a competitive nature,” Golden said. “They’ve made the commitment, they’ve put in the time. These are things that are essential to our success.”

During Friday’s practice, the humidity hit 78 percent with temperatures hovering in the mid-80s, a reasonable day by Miami standards; the Canes sported helmets, jersey tops and shorts (sans pads) as they would begin the start of practice with the Hurricane warning.

Officially, 106 players reported for fall camp. Noticeably missing was 6-foot-8, 345-pound offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson, who was in Minnesota attending a funeral of a close childhood friend.

Even after the early-afternoon thunderstorms, the Hurricanes battled intermittent rain throughout the nearly two-and-a-half hour practice. Dark clouds hovered near the Coral Gables campus for the majority of Friday’s fall debut.

One of the most noticeable moments of Friday’s practice were the footwear of Miami’s kicking duo, punter Dalton Botts and placekicker Jake Wieclaw. Both were seen sporting black cleats with bright neon orange laces.

Nearly 30 media members attended the start of practice, including 1991 Heisman Trophy winner and current College GameDay analyst Desmond Howard.

#CanesCamp continues Saturday with Miami’s second practice, which is scheduled to begin at 8:20 a.m.
