Lauren Riehle Wins Second Tournament
BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – For the second time this summer, incoming freshman Lauren Riehle has won a tournament. This time the Florida Junior Match-Play, held at Worthington Country Club in Bonita Springs, Fla. The win marks her second victory in three tournaments this offseason.
“It was a head to head intense playoff through every round of the tournament,” Riehle said. “Because of that it feels especially great to win this event.”
The freshman went into the event with a first round bye after winning a scorecard playoff. During the quarterfinal the Cane was paired with Angela Gaines of Ocala, Fla., who she defeated convincingly, 5 and 4. In the semifinal, she again eased past her opponent Mikaela Thibodeau of Davie, Fla., with 6-and-4 win.
The final match however would be a highly contested dual between the incoming freshman and Valentina Herrera of Plantation, Fla. Entering the final hole, Herrera led 1-up, but Riehle would rally to win the hole and set up a sudden death playoff. The incoming Cane stole the win with a birdie on the first playoff hole to take home her second first-place trophy of the summer.
“Winning is something I am very comfortable with,” Riehle said when asked about coming to expect wins. “I go into every competition with that hunger to win.”
Earlier this summer, Riehle won the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour Summer Classic, held at Shingle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla. Now with one tournament to go, Riehle will hope to build on her momentum at the AJGA Philadelphia Junior, held at Huntington Valley Country Club August 5-8.
