Canes Headed to Postseason Competition

CORAL GABLES, Fla.—Nine members of the University of Miami track and field team have been invited to participate in the NCAA East Regional Championships this weekend in Jacksonville, Fla., May 24-26. The University of North Florida will host the three-day event at Hodges Stadium.
With the second-fastest time in the nation in the 110-meter hurdles, and best in the East Region, three-time All-American Devon Hill looks to continue his quest for gold. Hill, a senior, hurdled to a first-place finish at the ACC Championships in 13.35 to post the best time of his career.
The women’s squad will send eight competitors to the national regional. Junior Samantha Williams will pull double-duty in Jacksonville, competing in both the long and triple jumps. Senior Tarika Williams enters the 100 meters with a time of 11.42 and will also run the second leg of the 4×100 relay. Joining the Williams duo will be sophomore Nicole Cummings, qualifying for the 100-meter hurdles and running the third leg of the 4×100 relay. Freshman Jokira Jiles will run the first leg of the relay, while sophomore Alyssa McClure the anchor leg. The relay quartet enters the competition with a season-best time of 44.93.
Sophomore hurdler Thandi Stewart enters East Regional Championships with the third-best time of the field. Stewart ran a 56.70 at the Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifer to earn a spot in the regionals.
Amber Monroe and Ashley Holmes will represent the Canes in the field events. Freshman Monroe will compete in the discus and Holmes, a senior, the hammer throw.
The meet gets underway Thursday, May 24 at 11 a.m. with the men’s javelin throw while action on the track starts at 4:30 p.m. with the men’s 400-meter hurdles.
The qualifiers out of the East Region, as well as the West Region, will compete in the NCAA Championships held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
