May 22, 2012
ATHENS, Ga. – Two University of Miami women’s tennis players will be competing in the NCAA Singles Championships at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex this week.
The singles championship will get underway Wednesday, with Miami’s 18th-ranked Anna Bartenstein and No. 27 Gabriela Mejia each competing. Bartenstein will face Washington State’s Liudmila Vasilieva at 1:30 p.m., while Mejia is set to take on Baylor’s Diana Nakic at 2:30 p.m.
The senior duo led the Hurricanes to their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals and will be two of 64 women in the singles championships.
Bartenstein, with a singles record of 19-6 in the spring and 20-5 in the fall, has never faced her opponent, but earlier this season Mejia (combined record of 27-4) defeated the then 15th-ranked Nakic, 6-2, 6-3 at the Canes’ own Neil Schiff Tennis Center on March 13.
In doubles, the 20th-ranked underclassmen tandem of sophomore Melissa Bolivar and freshman Liat Zimmermann were scheduled to start in the round of 32 on Thursday, however, injuries to both players have forced them to withdraw.
The Miami duo had been ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation this season playing out of the Canes’ No. 1. The ended the season with an 18-9 record against the nation’s best doubles teams.
