Canes to Play Penn State in ACC/Big 10 Challenge

May 22, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The ACC and Big Ten Conference offices announced on Tuesday that the University of Miami will welcome Penn State to the BankUnited Center on Thursday, Nov. 29 as part of the sixth annual ACC/Big Ten Women’s Basketball Challenge.

“With an already challenging schedule, the addition of Penn State makes this one of our toughest schedules ever,” Miami Head Coach Katie Meier said. “Our fans at the BankUnited Center will be in for a treat as Penn State has one of the best returning teams in the nation and should be among the Top 10 when the season begins.

“This is a great matchup and I’m looking forward to facing one of the top coaches in the game in Coquese Washington.”

The challenge will take place over a two-day span, beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 28. The ACC has had most of the success in the series, winning the first four years and settling for a tie last season. The recent entry of Nebraska to the Big Ten now allows all 12 teams in each conference to face one another.

Penn State will be a daunting task for the Canes. The Nittany Lions were regular season champs in 2011-12 and advanced to the Sweet 16, before falling to No. 1 seed Connecticut.

The Hurricanes hope to build on their success from last season, where they finished with a 26-6 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It was the second straight NCAA appearance for Meier and the Canes.

The rest of Miami’s schedule will be announced at a later date, including game information for the highly anticipated home meeting with Tennessee.
