Canes Set to Compete in Last Chance Qualifier

CORAL GABLES, Fla.—This weekend, a select few members of the University of Miami’s track and field teams will head to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Wolfpack Last Chance Meet. The Canes look to improve their times and marks in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

Senior All-American hurdler Devon Hill has already clocked the second-fastest time in the country among Division I athletes in the 110-meter hurdles with a blazing 13.35 gold-medal performance at the ACC Outdoor Championships. Hill will use the meet as a primer before the NCAA Regional Championships next weekend.  Joining Hill in the 110mH will be freshman Christian Cook.

Cook and Hill will team with Bassim El- Sabawi and Jason Johnson for the 4×100 relay. In addition to the relay duties, El-Sabawi and Johnson will also compete for NCAA Regional qualification in the 100, 200 meters and long jump, respectively.

Connor Adams and Greg Kaczka, who own the top-two times in UM history in the 1500 meters, will both compete in event this weekend. Freshman Innocent Jacob rounds out the men’s side as he is entered in the long jump.

On the women’s side, senior Tarika Williams headlines the squad as she will compete in the 100, 200 and the 4×100 relay.  Williams will be joined by freshman Jokira Jiles in all three events. Freshman Shannon Wright will run the 400 meters while sophomores Lindsi Arrington, Nicole Cummings and Thandi Stewart will compete in the 1500m, 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles, respectively. Stewart is coming off a personal-best performance at the ACC Outdoor Championships where she won the silver medal in a time of 57.46. Cummings, Wright and sophomore Alyssa McClure along with Williams and Jiles are all eligible to compete in the 4×100 meter relay with the order determined on race day.

In the field, junior Samantha Williams, the 2012 Penn Relays long jump champion, looks to earn a spot in the NCAA Regionals. She will be joined by teammate Cummings in the event. Freshman thrower Amber Monroe, who owns the fourth-best discus performance in UM history, will contest the field in that implement. Senior Ashley Holmes will compete in the hammer throw.

The Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifer gets underway Sunday at 2 p.m. with the men’s javelin throw and action on the track is schedule to begin at 6:15 p.m. with the men’s 110-meter high hurdles.
