Hurricanes Wrap Up Spring Campaign
April 21, 2012
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Coming off the deepest postseason run in program history, the University of Miami women’s soccer team wrapped up a successful spring campaign this past week at Cobb Stadium.
The Hurricanes accumulated an impressive 3-1-1 record against some of the best college soccer teams in the Sunshine State through five matches played from February through April.
“As a group we definitely improved at many of the things we wanted to accomplish,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “The addition of several players to the roster this spring really added to the depth and overall level of our team.”
Despite falling in their spring opener to UCF (1-0), the team bounced back for an impressive 1-1 draw against a strong Florida Gators side on the road. The Canes then reeled off three straight wins to close out their spring schedule, including one on the road at Florida State (3-2) and two home victories over South Florida (1-0) and Florida Gulf Coast (4-0).
“Although the results don’t mean very much in the spring, we were more competitive than we were this past fall and clearly played a better brand of soccer,” Anagnost said.
After defeating Alabama in double overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in November, the Hurricanes advanced to the second round for the first time in program history. Though they fell on the road in California against Long Beach State, the program made great strides in Coach Anagnost’s first year in Coral Gables on and off the pitch.
The Hurricanes earned recognition as an NSCAA Academic Award recipient and finished with the highest GPA in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Before their season opens in August, the Hurricanes will use the next three months to prepare for a grueling fall schedule. The Atlantic Coast Conference, considered the premier college soccer conferences in the nation, will provide another year of challenges for Coach Anagnost’s club. Individual training will be the key to success this fall, Anagnost says.
“Individually, each of our players understands the certain areas they must improve on before our preseason begins,” Anagnost said. “Their individual commitment to get better every day is crucial to their team success.
“As a coaching staff, we are all already very much looking forward to their continued specific improvements before we begin next preseason. If each of them roll their sleeves up and do the work, it should be a very exciting fall season.”
The Hurricanes will also be hosting their Elite Residential Camp this summer on the Coral Gables campus of the University of Miami. For more information on the camp, scheduled to take place from July 24-26, click HERE.
