Bartenstein and Mejia Named to All-ACC Women's Tennis Team
April 19, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Miami’s Gabriela Mejia and Anna Bartenstein have been selected as members of the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Team, as announced Thursday by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.
“I am so proud of Anna and Gaby,” said Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “Their improvement is a direct reflection of so much hard work and dedication. They have truly evolved as people since I’ve known them, these are two well deserving young ladies”
It marks the third such honor for Bartenstein, who has been named to the squad in each year she has donned a Hurricane uniform. The Austrian native transferred to UM after her freshman season at Tulane.
Mejia makes her first appearance on the 18-woman team after a stellar four-year career for the Hurricanes.
Both women have alternated spots at the No. 1 singles position for the Canes this season, a year where Miami only suffered three regular season losses – tying for the lowest defeats since the women’s tennis program was re-established in 1992.
The senior duo combined for a 33-7 record in singles play, with Bartenstein holding a season-best national ranking of 12th. Mejia is currently ranked No. 25, her highest ranking of the spring.
Partnered with freshman Lina Lileikite, Mateus went 17-4 in doubles play and the team rose to a season-best national ranking of 37th.
The Canes enter this weekend’s ACC Championships as a No. 3 seed, earning a first-round bye, and will face the winner of the No. 6 seed Georgia Tech/No. 11 seed Maryland match on Friday at 3 p.m. from the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
