Monday ProCanes Report: Jay, Sanchez Highlight Opening Week

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Monday Morning ProCanes report will weed through all the Major League Baseball highlights and news to bring you the information you care about the most… what the former University of Miami Hurricanes did during the week prior. As MLB teams across the nation began their 2012 campaigns, some of UBaseball’s most prominent alumni enjoyed stellar opening weeks for their professional clubs. While Jon Jay has helped guide the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-3 record out of the gates in the NL Central, Gaby Sanchez propelled the Miami Marlins to their first ever win at Marlins Park.
Jon Jay (St. Louis Cardinals) : 7-for-20 (.350 average), two doubles, two homeruns, four RBI
A key factor in the Cardinals’ run to the 2011 World Series, outfielder Jon Jay was back at it during an impressive first stretch for division-leading St. Louis. Jay connected on his second homerun of the year against rival Chicago on April 14, and recorded another dinger and two RBI in a close 4-3 loss to Cincinnati on April 11. Jay has a .344 average through the team’s first 10 games, and ranks fourth on the team with 19 total bases.

Gaby Sanchez (Miami Marlins): two doubles, four RBI, one walk-off hit
The Marlins recorded their first ever win at Marlins Park on the back of their All-Star first baseman, who connected on a big double against the Houston Astros that plated the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh. Sanchez, who finished the game 3-for-5, also had a two-hit, two-RBI performance in a win over division rival Philadelphia on April 9.

Jemile Weeks (Oakland Athletics): five hits, two doubles, one homerun
One of the rising stars on an up-and-coming team in Oakland, Jemile Weeks matched last season’s homerun total with his second longball of the year on April 13 against Seattle. Though he is off to a slow offensive start, he has recorded at least one hit in seven of eight games and has a season-best four-game hitting streak entering the team’s upcoming series with divisional foe Los Angeles.
Weekly Highlights: Solo Homer
Chris Perez (Cleveland Indians): two saves
The Indians All-Star closer recovered after blowing a save in his first outing of the year by recording two saves in the past week. Perez, who spent the spring rehabbing his arm, has pitched three scoreless inning since the blown save on April 5, striking out three batters while allowing only one hit in three innings pitched. His two saves early on are good for second-most in the AL Central and are tied for tenth-most in Major League Baseball.
