CORAL GABLES, Fla.—The No. 63 University of Miami men’s tennis team faced off against the No. 51 Virginia Tech Hokies on April 13 and fell short 6-1 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

“Virginia Tech played well and they deserved the win,” said Head Coach Mario Rincon. “Our guys competed hard, but we are not playing the big points well enough.”

The highlight of the match for the Canes took place in singles play, when Diego Soto defeated Corrado D.I. Tocci in the No. 4 spot 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).  It was the first singles match of the day to finish, and the first win of the day for Miami.

“Diego had a good win against an experienced player,” described Rincon.

Singles play didn’t turn out in favor of the Canes, however. Although four of the six singles matches went into the third set, Soto claimed the only win of the day for the Canes.

Gabriel Flores took on No. 44 Luka Somen in the No. 1 position. Flores brought his match into the third set, but in the end succumbed to his opponent. The match score was 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1 in favor of Somen.

In the No. 2 position, Omar Aly played against Lucas Oliviera and fell 6-4, 6-4 to his opponent. Wilfredo Gonzalez was defeated 7-6 (1), 6-3 by Patrick Daciek in the No. 3 spot.

Victor Mauz in the No. 5 position came out strong for the Canes, but couldn’t steal a win in his match against Mauricio Antun after bringing his match into the third set. The final match score was 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in favor of Antun.

Mark Schanerman also brought his match into the third set, playing No. 6 singles for the first time since the Canes took on Rice University on Feb. 5. In the final match of the day to finish, Schanerman fell to Trpimir Kujundzic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

The Canes were unsuccessful in doubles play, losing all three doubles matches and consequently the doubles point. The duo of Luka Somen and Corrado D.I. Tocci defeated Wilfredo Gonzalez and Henrique Tsukamoto 8-6 in the No. 1 position. In the No. 2 spot, Patrick Daciek and Lucas Oliviera overpowered Omar Aly and Mark Schanerman 8-6. Finally, Victor Mauz and Diego Soto fell to Hunter Koontz and Trpimir Kujundzic 8-3 in the No. 3 position.

The Canes remain in Virginia for the weekend as they take on another ACC team, the University of Virginia Cavaliers, at the Snyder Tennis Center on Sunday, April 15.
