Miami to Round Out Regular Season Play This Weekend

April 12, 2012

CORAL GABLES, Fla-  The No. 9 University of Miami women’s tennis team will finish up its regular season schedule this weekend with a couple of home matches against ACC opponents.  Miami will face 15th-ranked Virginia on Friday at 3 p.m. and 70th-ranked Virginia Tech Sunday at 12p.m.

The Hurricanes are coming off a couple of tough road losses this past weekend against No. 3 Duke and No. 8 UNC, but will seek to regain momentum against the Cavaliers and Hokies before heading into the ACC Championships which are set to begin April 19.

At 15-5 (6-3 ACC) Virginia currently sits just below Miami in the ACC rankings at No. 4.  After winning three straight conference matches the Cavaliers most recently dropped a 6-1 match against the Clemson Tigers, whom the Canes took down 5-2 early in the season.  Virginia has four players currently ranked in singles play, with  No. 19 Emily Frasier headlining the roster.  The senior is situated just below Anna Bartenstein at No. 18 which should make for an interesting matchup at the No. 1 singles position.

No. 70 Virginia Tech is 11-10 this spring and 3-6 in the ACC.  The Hokies have stumbled lately, having won only one out of their last six matches, losing 7-0 in four of those matches.

Friday’s match against Virginia will be senior day for Miami.  Anna Bartenstein and Gabriela Mejia will be recognized for their many achievements and contributions throughout the years as Hurricanes.
