Miami Set to Play Last Regular Season Tourney at Ole Miss
April 5, 2012
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — There is an NCAA Tournament bubble in sports other than college basketball and the Miami women’s golf team is squarely on that bubble right now.
The Canes, under second-year head coach Patti Rizzo, will attempt to create momentum in the final regular season tournament; the BanCorpSouth Rebel Intercollegiate in Oxford, Miss., Friday and Saturday.
UM is ranked 59th according to Golfstat.com heading into Friday’s opening round. Last season, only two teams ranked in the 60s made the NCAA Tournament, including New Mexico State, who was 68th and earned an at-large bid in to the West Regional.
A positive showing and momentum before the ACC Championship (April 13-15, Greensboro) would go a long way in securing the Canes first NCAA Tournament appearance since joining the ACC.
This year’s 15 participants in the Rebel Intercollegiate include host No. 39 Ole Miss, No. 17 Baylor, Harvard, Kansas State, Maryland, Memphis, Miami, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Missouri, Murray State, Redlands, Rollins, Southern Miss, and No. 37 Tulsa.
Miami is coming off a top-10 finish at the Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego, Calif., which saw senior Jennifer Hirano place third out of 89 participants. When asked what needed to be done to make regionals Hirano said, “We need to play the best that we can as a team. If everyone does their best, then no matter what, as a team we will make the NCAA regionals.”
The Ole Miss Golf Course is a 6,313 yard, par-72 that will host 54 holes of action the next three days. Live results will be available at Golfstat.com every three holes. Action begins Friday at 8 a.m. (ET).
