CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The ninth-ranked University of Miami Hurricanes return to the diamond Friday, when they open up a three-game series with the visiting Maryland Terrapins at Alex Rodriguez Park.
The Hurricanes, boasting an impressive 9-1 record over their last ten games, mark their return to Coral Gables after five games on the road. The team took its midweek matchup agaisnt No. 19 UCF in Orlando on March 14, won two out of three games against Duke last weekend in Durham, N.C, and also emerged victorious in its midweek battle with Florida Atlantic University this past Wednesday in Boca Raton.
Rising Up the Ranks
After another four-win week, the Hurricanes once again moved up in all of collegiate baseball’s most prominent polls released on March 19. The Hurricanes moved up to No. 9 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll (from No. 10), No. 12 in Baseball America’s weekly poll (from No. 14), No. 9 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Poll (from No. 11), and No. 13 in Perfect Game’s weekly poll (No. 15).
You’re the Best Around!
For his incredible accomplishments at the plate over the past week, senior catcher Peter O’Brien was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday. The Miami Gardens, Fla. native finished the week batting
.529, with three homeruns and nine RBI over the team’s five-game stretch. He also connected for three multi-hit games, including three doubles and 21 total bases. He hit his eighth homerun of the season Wednesday against FAU.
Scouting the Competition: Maryland Terrapins
The Terrapins have been one of college baseball’s most pleasant surprises in 2012. After beginning their season by taking two of three games in Los Angeles against UCLA, the Terps reeled off nine straight wins en route to an 11-1 record out of the gates. Maryland has earned votes in nearly every college baseball poll early on.
Though they have cooled off as of late (1-5 record in conference play), the Terps are led by an impressive rotation of righthanders Brett Harman, Brady Kirkpatrick and David Carroll. Offensively, the team has been powered by KJ Hockaday (.342 average, 11 RBI), Kyle Convissar (.301 average, one homerun) and Tim Kiene (three homeruns, 10 RBI).
