CORAL GABLES, Fla.–The No. 36 University of Miami Hurricanes beat the University of North Florida Ospreys, 5-2, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, clinching their third-straight win of the season.

Once again, the Canes won five-of-six in singles play after coming up short, 1-2, in doubles play.

“Today was a great team effort against this tough UNF team on our home court,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “Our team is getting better each match and the team is improving overall, which is good to see. The guys are working hard and are being great teammates.”

Although the team lost the doubles point, the duo of Omar Aly and Wilfredo Gonzalez in the first position won their match 8-4.

In singles, Gabriel Flores defeated Boritz Buerchner 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Omar Aly dominated Norbert Nemcsek 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 position, and No. 3 Wilfredo Gonzalez beat Daniel Sotomarino 7-6 (10-8), 3-1.

Diego Soto and Victor Mauz also won their singles matches. Soto took down Pedro Davisson 7-6 (10-2), 6-3, and Mauz claimed the victory after outscoring Leonardo Nahar 6-3, 6-4.

“It’s our third win in a row. Everyone competed really well in singles,” said Mauz. “After losing the doubles point we came up with two really quick victories that kept the team going. So we put the pressure on the other team and we won.”

The only player to come up short in singles was Henrique Tsukamoto, who lost to Julien Belair 4-6, 7-6 (10-4), 10-3.

However, Rincon is pleased with his team overall. “It’s tough to come back from getting behind after the doubles point, so I’m really proud of our guys,” said Rincon. “The team is feisty and very competitive.”

Next, Miami will host No. 32 Florida State on Sun., March 4 at 3:30 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
