Lane Carico Named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Feb. 22, 2012

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford released the 2011-12 ACC All-Academic Volleyball team on Wednesday, and four Hurricanes earned accolades for their accomplishments off the court and in the classroom.

Senior Lane Carico, who took home top honors as ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was recognized along with three teammates: senior Ali Becker, sophomore Alexandria Johnson, and redshirt freshman Emani Sims.

Carico is the first player in the history of the program to win the prestigious award.

“This is a great honor for her and it shows what a complete, well-rounded person Lane is,” Head Coach Nicole  Lantagne Welch said. “She puts her energies and efforts into everything, not only volleyball , but school as well.”

The Manhattan Beach, Calif. native has started every single game in her four-year career for the Hurricanes, maintaining stellar performances both in uniform and in the classroom.

Carico, who was named the 2011 ACC Player of the Year, has represented Miami on the All-ACC team and the All-East region team all four of her years in Coral Gables.  She was recently named to the 2011 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Second Team, which is the highest honor earned by a Hurricane in the history of the program. She graduates as UM’s all-time leader in kills (1,749) and points (1,973.5), and sits second all-time in Hurricanes history for digs (1,715).

“She works just as hard in classroom as she does on the court,” Welch said. “And that’s the complete definition of a great student-athlete.”

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.

The Hurricanes, who also placed Becker, Johnson and Sims on the All-Academic list, tied for the second-most of any school in the conference with four selections. Becker, a Texas native, headlined the group with a perfect 4.0 GPA this past fall.

“Having four players honored is a great reflection of our program and how seriously we take academics,” Welch said. “It’s something we stress, and it’s a great honor for Ali, Alex, Emani and Lane.”
