CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 37 University of Miami men’s tennis team will travel to Houston, Texas, to face No. 38 Rice University on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
Miami (3-1, 0-1) enters the match after two tough matches at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend last week. The Canes began the weekend with a tight battle with No. 39 Wake Forest that they lost 4-3. They rebounded with a close 4-3 win on Sunday over No. 57 New Mexico.
Freshman Henrique Tsukamoto had a great weekend as he won all three of his matches. He had one of the three wins for the Canes on Saturday against Wake Forest. He added wins in both singles and doubles against New Mexico including the decisive victory over the Lobos’ Phil Anderson.
Sophomore Omar Aly and freshman Wilfredo Gonzalez also earned a huge victory over New Mexico’s No. 16 ranked doubles pair of Jadon Phillips and Anderson.
Rice comes into the match against Miami with a 3-3 record after a split of last weekend’s matches at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Baylor University. The Owls were beaten by No. 42 Florida State in a 5-2 match on Saturday, but rebounded with a 6-1 victory over No. 60 New Mexico State on Sunday.
The Owls are led by junior Harry Fowler who has a 4-2 record from the No. 1 position. Senior Michael Nuesslein has also been great for Rice as enters the match against the Canes with a record of 5-1.
