CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 33 University of Miami men’s tennis team earned its third victory of the season as they defeated No. 55 New Mexico in a tight 4-3 match in the consolation round at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event at the University of Florida.
Miami, who is coming off a tough loss to No. 41 Wake Forest yesterday, won three singles matches and two of the doubles matches against the Lobos.
“I’m proud of our guys for bouncing back after a tough lost yesterday,” said Head Coach Mario Rincon. “New Mexico gave us all we could handle today.”
The Canes got off to a great start in doubles play as the team of Wilfredo Gonzalez and Omar Aly defeated the No. 16 ranked doubles team of Jadon Phillips and Phil Anderson 8-3. Victor Mauz and Henrique Tsukamoto clinched the doubles point for Miami when they won 9-8 (6) against Carl Ho and James Hignett.
Gonzalez, Tsukamoto and sophomore Diego Soto added the Canes three singles victories. Gonzalez defeated Ben Dunbar in straight sets 6-1 and 7-5. Soto also won in straight sets as he was victorious over Carl Ho 6-3 and 6-3.
Freshman Henrique Tsukamoto ultimately clinched the match when he defeated Phil Anderson in three sets, 6-3, 4-6 and 6-1.
“Henrique finished strong, clinching the match in the third,” continued Rincon. “Wilfredo had a great day in singles and doubles while Diego played well with a lot of energy as always.”
