Hurricanes Set for Birmingham Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–The University of Miami track and field team is set to return to competition on Wednesday, Jan. 25 when it travels to Birmingham, Ala. for the Birmingham Invitational. The two-day, 21-team meet will continue on Thursday.
Competition gets underway for the Canes at 2:10 p.m. when senior Rachel Dupree participates in the pentathlon. Following the pentathlon will be a seeded 5K race, wrapping up day one.
The field events kick off the next morning at 9 a.m. with the weight throw, high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump and shot put. Highlighting the field events for the Canes are seniors Miranda Wilson and Ashley Holmes in the weight throws and freshman Innocent Jacob in the long and high jumps.
The running events will also commence on Thursday, starting with the unseeded 5K race and continuing with 60m hurdles, 60m dash, mile run, 400m dash, 3,000m run, 800m run, 200m dash, and finishing the day with 4x400m relays for men and women. Christian Cook and Darrell Butler will be among the Canes competing in the hurdle events, and Connor Adams, Luke Fontaine and Matthew Wilson will run the mile.
All-American hurdler Tameka Jameson and reigning ACC 200-meter champion Tarika Williams will lead the Canes once again for the women. All-American hurdler Devon Hill leads a talented men’s squad after a strong performance at the Kentucky Invitational. Nine freshmen will be participating in their second collegiate competition.
Miami will face strong teams again this week as the 10th ranked Southern Mississippi women’s team will be in attendance at the meet. On the men’s side, the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s computer rankings have Mississippi State 20th in the nation.
Former Miami track and field standout Lauryn Williams will also be competing at the Birmingham Invitational. Williams will run the 60 meters, unattached.
