CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Three University of Miami tennis players earned victories in singles matches on Day Two of the Gardnar Mulloy Miami Invitational held at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

“Wilfredo played a lot more aggressive today, finishing more points at the net, and putting pressure on his opponent,” said Rincon. “Diego had a great win today, too. He showed a lot of poise to close out the match in the third. Victor also played a solid match as he played much better than yesterday.”

Freshman Wilfredo Gonzalez defeated Illinois’ Stephen Hoh (6-4, 6-3) and junior Victor Mauz downed Ross Guignon (6-4, 6-4) in straight sets, while sophomore Diego Soto beat Tim Kopkinski in three (6-3, 2-6, 6-4).

“It was a tough match today,” said Diego Soto. “At the beginning, there was a lot of back-and-forth, but I was more rested than him and I came out with the win. In the second set, he fared really well. The third set was tough because it was based on the serves. I broke him at 5-4. It was really hard to close the match, but it was a big victory for me and an even bigger win for the team.”

In other singles matches, sophomore Gabriel Flores and junior Marco Stancati each lost in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, respectively. Sophomore Omar Aly was defeated 7-6, 6-1 and Henrique Tsukamoto lost 6-4, 6-2. Junior Mark Schanerman’s match was cut short after a set and a half, due to an injury.

“Omar and Gabriel played some of the very best players in the country, and showed that they’re capable of playing at that level,” added Rincon.

Miami came up short in all four doubles matches. Tsukamoto and Schanerman took Texas Tech’s Jeff Bryan and Gabriel Wanderley to tiebreaker, but lost, 9-8 (7-4).

“It was a good second day for us, and we want to finish strong tomorrow,” concluded Coach Mario Rincon.
