CORAL GABLES, Fla.–The University of Miami track and field team is set to open the 2012 season on Friday, Jan. 13 when it travels to Lexington, Ky. for the Kentucky Invitational. The two-day, 12-team meet will continue on Saturday.

The meet gets underway Friday night at 6 p.m. with the weight throw, women’s pole vault, men’s high jump and triple jump. The field events wrap up Saturday morning beginning at 10:30 a.m., with running events set to start at 12:30 p.m.

“Our team is looking forward to competing at Kentucky,” said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem. “We have opened up there before and had some very good performances.”

The Canes will meet some tough competition with three ranked teams at the meet. On the women’s side, Arkansas is ranked No. 4 in the nation and Georgia 14th in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s computer rankings. The men’s squad will face No. 21 Georgia.

“Our team is a good mix of veterans and newcomers and that’s exciting,” added Deem. “We will look for strong leadership from our senior All-Americans and reigning ACC champion.”

The Miami men’s squad will look to senior All-American hurdler Devon Hill to lead the team. Hill leads a balanced squad this weekend with eight upperclassmen and six underclassmen competing, including four freshmen.

The women’s team is led by All-American hurdler Tameka Jameson. The Hurricanes will also be guided by reigning ACC 200-meter champion Tarika Williams as she looks to continue the Canes’ dominance on the track. Joining the talented duo are six upperclassmen and nine underclassmen, including five freshmen who will make their first ever collegiate track debut.
