Canes Baseball Ranked No. 14 in CBN Preseason Poll

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team earned its first preseason ranking for the 2012 season on Monday, Dec. 19, using a No. 14 spot in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason Top 40.
Miami returns 18 letterwinners from a season ago in which the Hurricanes finished 38-23 overall (19-10 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Canes advanced to their NCAA-record 39th consecutive NCAA Regional as they traveled to the Gainesville [Fla.] Regional. Among the returning players for the Hurricanes is the entire starting pitching staff that includes Bryan Radziewski, Eric Whaley and Steven Ewing, with the addition of E.J. Encinosa moving to the bullpen as a closer.
Head coach Jim Morris, set to embark upon his illustrious 19th year at the helm in Coral Gables, and the Hurricanes will open the 2012 slate at home inside Alex Rodriguez Park against Rutgers for a three-game set beginning Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. The Canes will host 16 of their first 18 games inside Alex Rodriguez Park to open the year, including a series with preseason top-ranked Florida beginning Friday, March 2.
UMiami will play a total of 54 games in 2012, including 41 of those contests in the Sunshine State.
In all, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) had five teams crack the CBN Preseason Top 25 poll with North Carolina earning the highest spot at No. 4. The Tar Heels were followed by Georgia Tech (9), Florida State (13), Miami (14) and Clemson (25). Last year’s CWS runner-up Florida Gators earned the top spot after finishing the 2011 season 53-19 and falling to NCAA champion South Carolina in the national title series.
Following the Gators in order as the preseason top five are South Carolina, Stanford, North Carolina and Texas.
