Hurricanes Men's Tennis Announces 2012 Schedule

Dec. 2, 2011

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami head men’s tennis coach Mario Rincon has officially released the 2012 fall tennis schedule for the Hurricanes. The Canes will enjoy 13 matches on their home courts at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Miami returns with only one senior and three sophomores from a season ago in which the Hurricanes finished 15-9 overall (8-3 in ACC). The Canes finished the season ranked No. 27 in the nation and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Hurricanes will play 23 dual matches and participate in two in-season tournaments in 2012.

The team will open the season with the USTA Futures tournament in Plantation, Fla. The Miami Invitational, which will feature Texas Tech, Texas A&M and Illinois, will start on Jan. 12 and run through Jan. 14 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Texas A&M is coming off a season that ended ranked as the No. 10 team in the country and a third-round exit from the NCAA Tournament. Illinois also lost in the third round of the NCAA Tournament with their No. 17 ranking. Texas Tech finished last season ranked No. 21 and lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Canes will follow with two more home matches against FAU and FAMU before heading to Gainesville, Fla. on Jan. 28 for ITA Kick-off Weekend. This weekend tournament will feature last season’s No. 9 Florida, No. 33 Wake Forest and No. 56 New Mexico.

February will kick off with a dual match against Rice followed by the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. if the team qualifies for the tournament. The season will come to a close with 12 dual matches, including 11 ACC matchups, in March and April.

Virginia will be one of the toughest matches for the Hurricanes this season. The Cavaliers ended last season ranked No. 2 in the country and lost in the national championship to USC. Other tough in-conference opponents will be Duke, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina who ended last season ranked No. 12, No. 13 and No. 18, respectively. Virginia Tech, Maryland, USF and Florida State all finished in last season’s Top-50 also.

The postseason will begin April 19 with the first round of the ACC Championships in Cary, N.C., which will run through April 22. The NCAA Team Tournament will begin May 12. The season will finish with the NCAA Individual Tournament that will run from May 23 through May 28 in Athens, Ga.
