Coral Gables, Fla. – Holding its first meet at home in more than a month, the University of Miami swimming & diving team got back to business Friday afternoon taking down Indian River State College in a dual meet, 157-83, at the Norman A. Whitten University Center Pool.
Overall on the day, Miami took first place in 11 of the 13 women’s events, as well as two first place men’s diving events. The Indian River squad also fielded a men’s team who swam for qualifying times on the day in 11 events of their own, aside from the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions.
The Hurricanes’ 200 medley relay team began the day with a victory behind the team of Hannah Kling, Sofia Johansson, Kayla Smith and Kelsi Hall turning in a time of 1:45.90, three seconds ahead of the Indian River “A” team.
Junior Christine Anderson walked away with the first place finish in the 1000 freestyle as she laid claim to a time of 10:30.02. Lucy Worrall (1:53.89) and Haley Nicholson (1:58.41) were second and fourth, respectively, in the 200 freestyle.
UM took the top four times in the 50 freestyle as Hall touched the pad in a winning performance of 23.38, followed by Celeste Degen (24.34), Smith (24.86) and Katherine Nicholson (25.14). Hannah Kling took the win in the 200 individual medley and senior teammate Dana Hatic was third (2:10.46) followed by classmate Roxanne Meyer (2:10.89) in fourth.
In the diving well, UMiami went 1-2-3 in the women’s 3-meter event. Sophomore Lindsay Lester took top honors with a score of 336.53, followed in order by classmate Thea Vock (323.55) and freshman Kara McCormack (291.23). In the women’s 1-meter, it was again 1-2-3 for the Canes, but a little change at the top. Vock claimed top honors on her final score of 321.45, while Lester was second (315.98) and McCormack third (300.30).
On the men’s side, sophomore Sam Dorman swept the 1- and 3-meter springboard for the Hurricanes, using a score of 408.98 on the 1-meter board, followed by a winning performance of 423.45 in the 3-meter competition.
UM freshman Worrall touched the wall in a winning time of 56.98 for the 100 butterfly, and it was Hall following her up with a winning time of 51.64 in the 100 freestyle. Kling was the top performer in the 100 backstroke as she turned in a time of 58.31, followed by Meyer in second place at 59.74. Katherine Nicholson was fourth (1:02.14) in the race.
The Canes went first and second with Anderson (5:08.69) and Worrall (5:09.11) in the 500 freestyle. Meanwhile, Johansson was the winner in the 100 breast in a time of 1:04.85, followed by Hatic in third at 1:05.62.
The IRSC 800 free relay team took the win in the day’s final event with a time of 7:57.10, as UM was second at 8:01.79 behind the team of Anderson, Meyer, Degen and Katherine Nicholson.
The UM divers get back to action on Nov. 11 and 12 at a dual diving competition hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. For UM male diver Sam Dorman, the meets serve as a trip home for the Tempe native. Once there, the men and women divers will take on host ASU and Southern California.
