Hurricanes Ready for UCF Invitational
Nov. 2, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team is participating in the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla., this weekend. The event runs from Friday, Nov. 4 through Sunday, Nov. 6 at the UCF Tennis Complex.
The Hurricanes are part of a four-team field that includes Arkansas, Auburn and UCF. Miami and Auburn are the only teams that were ranked in last season’s Top 30, with Auburn at No. 19 and Miami at No. 27.
UM sophomore Diego Soto will look to lead the Canes after finishing the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships with three-straight wins. His three victories came after a tough first match that knocked him out of the championship draw.
The doubles team of freshman Victor Mauz and senior Santiago Nieto are hoping to build on their success in the last tournament, as well. The pair won their first two matches, before losing in the round of 16 at the Southeast Regional Championships to Campbell Johnson and Will Reynolds of Georgia.
Auburn has the only three tennis players ranked in this season’s Top 70. Dennis Lengsfeld, Alexander Stamchev and Andreas Miles are ranked No. 54, No. 57, and No. 70, respectively.
Play will get underway in a hidden dual meet format for the Hurricanes Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. when they face Arkansas. The hidden dual meet format means that teams will compete in a dual meet style, but it won’t count against the team’s record.
Florida Gulf Coast will also participate in the event, but will not be a part of the dual meet format. Their players will face extra players from Arkansas, Auburn and Miami each day.
