Main Draw Singles Bracket | Consolation Singles Bracket
Gainesville, Fla. – Anna Bartenstein and Brittany Dubins each scored two wins Saturday as they advanced in the main and consolation brackets of the USTA/ITA Southeast Region Championships at the Ring Tennis Complex. The event is being hosted by the University of Florida.
Bartenstein, ranked No. 25 in the ITA preseason singles poll, began the day with a straight-set 6-3, 6-1 win over Alex Apostu of Kennesaw State. She came back in her next match to defeat Georgia’s Kate Fuller in order to advance to the Round of 16 in the main draw bracket. In fact, Bartenstein trailed Fuller in the second set, 5-2, before bouncing back for the win in straight-set fashion, 6-2, 7-6(5).
“Even though Anna trailed deep in the second set, I was happy to see her implement some of the things we’ve been working on in practice,” said UMiami head women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “It’s nice to see her use the things we’ve been practicing and working on in order to fight back for the win.”
Bartenstein will face Sofie Oyen of Florida on Sunday. With the wins Saturday, the Graz, Austria native bumped her record for the fall up to 14-3.
Dubins, a sophomore for the Hurricanes, also had two straight-set wins Saturday in the consolation bracket.
She earned her first victory on the strength of a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Florida Gulf Coast’s Gyanna Mandic. Dubins followed that with a nightcap win of 6-4, 7-6(6) over Alessandra Bonte of USF. The wins allowed Dubins to improve to 4-5 in the fall season.
“Brittany played one of the best matches I’ve seen her play since being at the University of Miami,” said Yaroshuk-Tews. “She competed and dug her heels in deep. She just persevered through everything, and her tennis got better as the match went on against a good opponent.”
Dubins will face FIU’s Giulietta Boha in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket on Sunday.
The final match of the day for UM was played by Melissa Bolivar who dropped a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 decision to Jacksonville’s Aline Staudt.
Action at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships resumes Sunday at 9 a.m.
