No. 21 Hurricanes Sweep Through Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – All-America outside hitter Lane Carico supplied 13 kills while Ali Becker had 10 to help the No. 21 University of Miami sweep past homestanding University of Virginia, 3-0 [25-20, 25-14, 25-22] in Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball on Sunday inside Memorial Gymnasium.

After using defense to defeat Virginia Tech on Friday night, Miami (11-1, 2-1 ACC) got back to work offensively Sunday. The Hurricanes hit at a season-high .387 clip in order to defeat Virginia (6-7, 0-3 ACC) on the road for the first time since 2007. Throughout the match, the Hurricanes trailed on just four service points, with three of those coming in the opening set.

Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) staked her seventh double-double of the year with a match-high 13 kills to go along with a match-high 11 digs. Ali Becker (Katy, Texas) picked up her fourth double-digit kills match – and her third consecutive – with 10 kills on 17 swings to finish with a .471 hitting percentage. She would go on to add a match-high tying two blocks.

Hurricanes redshirt senior outside hitter Christine Williamson (Tampa, Fla.) picked up nine kills with a match-high .474 attack percentage without committing an error, also adding two digs defensively.

The Cavaliers of Virginia finished the match with five service errors and hitting at a .257 clip. They were led statistically by Tori Janowski with 10 kills and two block assists. Beth Wildermuth and Emily Rottman each staked 10 digs to pace the defense.

UMiami redshirt senior setter Katie Gallagher (Winter Park, Fla.) handed out 39 assists and sophomore outside hitter Alex Johnson (Tallahassee, Fla.) raked in 10 digs to go along with eight kills. Lizzie Hale (Menlo Park, Calif.) and Taylor Hollins (Long Beach, Calif.) each recorded two service aces as UM finished with six as a team.
