Hirano Leads Canes in 2011 Opener

HARAHAN, S.C. – Senior Jennifer Hirano shot a very impressive one-over par to lead the University of Miami women’s golf team in its season opener at the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston at Yeamans Hall Sunday.
The young Canes shot a respectable 302 in the first round but felt that they could have played better.
“Our freshman felt they could do much better,” UM head women’s golf coach Patti Rizzo said. “We feel tomorrow will be a better day now that all the first round jitters are out of the way. I think we are going to do great tomorrow.”
LSU leads after the first round after shooting 8-under par 280. Florida (284), North Carolina (285), North Carolina State and Alabama (287) round out the top five. Miami (302) is 14th going into the second day.
Hirano shot 73 and newcomer Rika Park delivered a 76 to pace the Hurricanes. She turned in an even par 36 on the front nine, including a birdie on hole five. Park was even par thru 10 and had a birdie for the day.
Senior Patricia Arana also had a nice round, finishing with a four-over par 76. She delivered an even par 36 on the front nine and registered three birdies on the day.
Freshman Leticia Ras-Anderica shot a five-over par 77 in round one posting a one-over par 37 on the back nine. She finished with par on 13 of the 18 holes.
Freshman Shannon Pak was able to post a seven-over par 79 in her first action with the Canes.
Play at the Cougar Classic will resume Monday with the second round.
