Sept. 6, 2011
FT. MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Tara Schwitter scored her second and third goals of the young season in leading the University of Miami women’s soccer team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday evening. Schwitter’s game-winner came just one minute into the second sudden death overtime period. Freshman forward Shannon Caspar fed the Oradell, N.J. native with a perfect pass that Schwitter finished past the keeper into the left side. “Tara was fantastic tonight,” said Miami head coach Tom Anagnost. “She was very dynamic in the attack and became even more dangerous as the game went on.” Schwitter also opened the scoring in the match with a 58th-minute goal from inside the 18-yard box. Kate Howarth, the Canes’ leading scorer was credited with the assist. Florida Gulf Coast (4-2) proved to be a formidable opponent, weathering a first half that saw Miami fire off 10 shots. The host Eagles rallied back after Schwitter’s first goal, when Jess Swartzentruber scored in the 67th minute. “I want to recognize Florida Gulf Coast on a great game,” said Anagnost. “They were well coached and made it very tough on us tonight.” Miami goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo made six saves on the night in 101 minutes in net and now sports a superb 0.55 goals against average on the season. The win improves the Canes record to 5-1 on the season as they head into next week’s Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Clemson. The University of Miami is also excited to offer a new season ticket package that will include two (2) adult and (3) youth tickets to all home volleyball and soccer events in the 2011 season. The Family plan provides a family of five with over 20 events for the incredible price of $50. To purchase a Volleyball and Soccer Family Plan call 1-800-Go Canes or buy online. |
